The Best Of Suzdal, Russia

Best: Walk
Around the grounds of the Convent of Intercession.

The convent was founded in 1364 and served as a place for Tzars to exile their wives when they grew tired of them.

Best: Meal
Veal in country style – topped with shredded carrot, tomato and goat cheese – with potatoes and cabbage salad (in a really light dressing that was excellent).

Best: Activity
Mead Tasting!  Mead was the drink of choice for princes and royalty before vodka came along in the 16th century.

There is a dedicated Mead Tasting Hall in town that, sacrilegiously or not, is decorated like the interior of a church.

There are 10 different flavors and you can order your samples in various potencies of alcohol. (I liked numbers 2 and 6 the best).

We tried all 10 varieties for just 200 rubles (about $6USD).

Best: Monument
The eternal flame and list of Suzdal natives who served and died in WII.

Best: Exhibit
The prison inside the Savior Monestery of the St. Euthymius.  Prisoners here were typically religious dissidents rather than “real” criminals so the accommodations were a bit more forgiving than your typical Russian prison.

While we got the general sense of what was on display, nothing was in English (like every museum so far) so I’m sure we missed out on tons of information.

Best: Grocery Store Find
Mini octopi.

Best: Unexpected Find
Chickens!  Okay, so Suzdal is in the country and thus chickens should not have been a surprise, but after big-city Moscow we weren’t exactly mentally prepared for roaming poultry.  Not to mention the big black one was evil and chased us down the dirt road.
